South Bay Ballet Presents Coppelia - A Doll's Story
South Bay Ballet will close its 2010 - 2011 Season with classical ballet's greatest comedy, Coppelia, the story of a life-size dancing doll. Tickets now on sale!

TORRANCE, CA, April 05, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Be whisked away to a toymaker's workshop as South Bay Ballet presents the Storybook Ballet Coppelia, a charming and sentimental tale of mistaken identity and a beautiful life-size doll, on June 4, 2011 at 2 and 6 pm, and June 5 at 3 pm at the James R. Armstrong Theatre in Torrance. From the escapades of Dr. Coppelius to the humorous misunderstandings between Swanhilda and Franz, along with the engaging score by Leo Delibes, South Bay Ballet's staging of this light-hearted comedy promises to delight your auditory and visual senses, and tickle your funny bone! Tickets are now on sale through South Bay Ballet at (562) 754-6476 or by visiting www.southbayballet.org.

"Coppelia offers absolute delight to ballet newcomers and families, as well as South Bay Ballet's most seasoned patrons," shares Catherine Jacobson, president of the board of directors for South Bay Ballet. "The dancing is of course lovely, while the characterization and comic timing of this classic will keep audiences enchanted the entire time."

Presented in three acts, Coppelia is a comedic ballet about a mysterious toy-maker, Dr. Coppelius, who lives in the town square. Dr. Coppelius shares his house with a beautiful life-size doll, Coppelia that he created to keep himself company in his workshop. Everyday Coppelia is seated with her book on the front balcony of the toy-maker's workshop. His neighbor, Swanilda, and her fiance, Franz, believe Coppelia is real. Franz falls in love with the beautiful doll. The adventure begins as both he and Swanilda sneak into the toy-maker's workshop, separately, to meet Coppelia.

South Bay Ballet's staging of Coppelia promises to captivate with all new costumes of brilliant color and design, and the talented, pre-professional dancers of Lauridsen Ballet Centre, the official school of South Bay Ballet. Senior Company members, John-Paul Simoens will lead the production in the role of Franz partnered by Delaney Zeig in the role Swanilda. Audiences will also be treated to Keiji Ino's comedic interpretation of Dr. Coppelius.
