TORRANCE, CA, January 24, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- South Bay Ballet's 30th Anniversary season continues with its annual dance concert BRAVO! The Classical & Contemporary Ballet Experience, an eclectic repertoire from traditional classics to exciting contemporary ballets. A weekend of thrilling selections and inspired performances, the program will feature South Bay Ballet's entire company and will treat audiences to a guest appearance by The California Conservatory of Dance Ensemble. BRAVO! will be presented for one weekend only, Saturday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 7 at 2:00 p.m. at the James R. Armstrong Theatre. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Theatre Box Office at 310.781.7171 or in person at 3330 Civic Center Drive, Torrance.
"BRAVO! is one of the most exciting performances of our season and this year's presentation is no exception," explains South Bay Ballet's Artistic Director, Diane Lauridsen. "Through BRAVO!, we provide the opportunity and creative space to encourage new choreography, which is crucial for the future of the Art form and is an integral part of South Bay Ballet's mission. BRAVO! provides a forum for talented choreographers as well as the opportunity for our audiences to experience their work. The performance will be full of surprises and contrasts, a perfect way to get to know the Company and our versatile artists."
South Bay Ballet's annual dance concert features a complete line-up of contemporary and classical works. Award winning choreographers Heather Gray, Utah Regional Ballet II's Artistic Director, will premiere a spirited baroque ballet entitled Allegro con Spirito, along with the premiere of Kenneth Walker's inspired piece set to a classical Mexican score entitled Rito Transcendente. Professional dancer and choreographer, Julie Rose Shulman, introduces Stand Alone, a new minimalist and haunting contemporary ballet.
Audiences will also enjoy the return of the high-energy, contemporary piece, Alegria, featuring South Bay Ballet's entire junior company, as well as emerging choreography by senior company member Skylar Kolby Burson with his playful, original work Replica. A talented group from The California Conservatory of Dance Ensemble will make a guest appearance reprising an intriguing piece by Kimberly Olmos, entitled Le Do Gras.
BRAVO! closes when South Bay Ballet's dancers get down and swing in One O'clock Jump, a modern tribute in dance to the big band era of the 1930s and 1940s. This high-energy, swing-style performance makes a strong departure from the Company's usual balletic mode. One O'clock Jump is a wonderful combination of traditional steps with original free-style moves that is sure to "flip a wig!"
